When to leave for a Sea-Tac flight

Airliner parked at a terminal gate

Work backwards from the departure time: the drive, the traffic at that hour, and the time the airport itself needs.

The question is never just “how far is the airport”. It is how long the drive takes at that hour, plus how long bag drop and security take on that day. Get both right and the morning of a flight becomes calm.

Step 1: the airport time

For a domestic flight, most airlines ask you to be at the airport around two hours before departure if you are checking bags; for international flights, around three. Sea-Tac security lines vary a lot by time of day — early-morning banks and holiday weekends are the busiest — so treat these as the minimum.

Step 2: the drive at that hour

Everett50–75 min75–110 min

Peak ranges are indicative; accidents, weather and stadium events change them. Your driver sets the pickup time from the conditions expected on your date.

Step 3: add them up

A 9:00 domestic flight from downtown Seattle on a weekday: two hours at the airport plus about 45 minutes of driving means a pickup around 6:15. The same flight from Redmond: closer to 5:45.

Leaving ten minutes early costs ten minutes. Leaving ten minutes late can cost the flight.

When you book a ride to Sea-Tac, we do this calculation for you and confirm the pickup time with the price.

Things that add time

  • Monday mornings and Friday afternoons — the heaviest business-travel windows on I-5 and I-405.
  • Holiday weekends and the start of school breaks — long security lines, full parking garages, slow drop-off lanes.
  • Cruise Saturdays in summer — thousands of cruise passengers head to SEA the same morning.
  • Game days — Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders events change traffic through SoDo and on I-5.
  • Weather — the first rain after a dry spell and any snow slow the whole region down.

Early-morning flights

The first departure banks at Sea-Tac leave around six in the morning, and the security lines build well before that. Roads are quiet at that hour, so the drive is shorter — but the airport is not. For a 6:30 departure from downtown, a pickup around 4:00–4:15 is sensible; from the Eastside, closer to 3:45. Book these the day before so the car is set.

International departures

Allow three hours at the airport for international flights, plus the drive. Check whether your airline requires document checks at the counter even if you checked in online.

How we set your pickup time

When you book a ride to SEA we look at your flight time, the address, the day of the week and anything happening in the city that day, then propose a pickup time with the price. If you prefer more buffer, say so — we would always rather you wait at the gate than in traffic.
